May I recommend a useful article to help in your job search “How To Meet And Influence People You Don’t Know” I came across in the Huffington Post.  It gives some very sensible ideas as to how to develop connections into companies that you have chosen to target.

It is far more likely that successful candidates are the ones who are already known, liked and trusted by the appointees. In fact, in jobs involving technical competence or at senior level, up to 90% get created around the skills, ability and knowledge around that lucky someone because they are just what the company is looking for. Even in this day and age, talent is highly prized.
