“How To Command The Room: Get People To Turn To You”

The British traditionally claim the space that their bodies occupy as well as the 18 inches circumference around themselves as their own. In other cultures, the requirement for personal space will be either less or more. However, whatever the requirement, to thoroughly own one’s personal space is important to appear confident and in control.

When you want to engage your audience, you need to look like the leader, the one in command (though remember, you are the messenger, not the hero!). You also need to be in command of yourself as well. So you must develop techniques that give you presence – the sort of impact that makes people instinctively turn in your direction. This is one technique that I’ve found very helpful:

▪   In your mind’s eye, trace that circumference as a circle of colour around yourself and then fill in the circle with the colour.

▪   Now inject the colour with energy and grow it so that it fills the room, enfolding the objects and people within the room until it pushes up against the walls, ceiling and floors.

▪   Increase the energy again so the colour is so concentrated that it’s now leaking out through doors and windows so that it fills all the other rooms in the building. It is now enfolding the whole building in colour and light.

▪   Let it grow further to include the sky, the landscape and buildings nearby. You now command all this space and all the people within the space as your own. So go on….own it all!

This technique is  useful just before you enter a room where you want to impress. It helps with confidence and distracts attention from nervousness.
